In 1972 Suki Takagi moved to Vancouver, purchased a small salon at the site of our current South Granville location. She started with no clients but a clear vision of what hairdressing could be. The company was built one client at a time, primarily through recommendations from clients.
From the beginning the focus was on strong technical cutting and great colour work. In 1978 the Suki’s Advanced Academy was founded, primarily to train our own staff. Today the Suki’s Academy attracts North American and international students and is considered one of the finest training facilities in the world. Suki’s was the first salon in Canada to utilize Technicians, who specialize in colour.
The company remains committed to quality and innovation. The vast majority of all Suki’s Stylists and Technicians started with the company as Apprentices, completed the Suki’s Academy and passed a demanding final exam to work in the salons. Simply put, our Stylists and Technicians are better because they are better trained.
